Özet

Introduction: Sociolinguistics - Language and Society

Sociolinguistic knowledge in English Language Teaching has long been neglected due to the fact that ELT has been under the influence of first traditional then structuralist approaches to teaching of foreign languages. Although the ethnographic studies of Malinowski (1945) have brought the concept of culture reflection into the language field, the techniques like memorization of narratives and later dialogues, and then mechanical drills aiming to reinforce grammatical competence following Chomskyan (1965) tradition, have swept the classrooms until the 1970s. The introduction of communicative competence by Dell Hymes (1979) in 70s created a change in the way classrooms were organized and brought about more social approaches following Vygoskyan approaches like interaction as well. Thus sociolinguistic competence alongside linguistic, discourse and strategic competence have prevailed as an integral part of the content in the language classrooms.
